Report from Nova Scotia

Because I know you miss me, here is a Nova Scotia holiday update and the photos:

Thursday: drove back from Chester (try and avoid the construction on the Halifax side of "new" bridge); lunch with Stinker (a great pal from Loyalist days who drove down from Moncton) at Jamieson’s (lovely); manicures at the MicMac Mall; next we picked up Mr. Flackadelic and took a drive to Lawrencetown Beach where it started to pour rain; the three of us went over to Casino Nova Scotia and then back to Dartmouth so Stinker could make the return trip; given the weather wasn’t great, Mr. Flackadelic and I headed to the late showing of Transformers at the new Dartmouth Crossing development last night.

Wednesday: went to our friend’s cottage near Chester; shopped through all the boutiques of the historic village (highlights: Chez Glass Lass; Julien’s Pastry Shop Ltd. – go early and get an almond croissant); the five of us enjoyed dinner at The Fo’c'sle an old-style tavern; much cottage (camp) fun

Tuesday: acted like tourists in Halifax – strolled the waterfront; ate fish and chips and drink Moosehead in a pub; crawled through John W. Doull Bookseller (bought a couple of Nova Scotia lit titles); went to the Fireworks Gallery where Mr. Flackadelic bought my birthday present (a sterling silver bracelet by local artist Catherine Beck); had a stroll around the Dalhousie campus marveling at at least 7 new buildings that have gone up since our time as students; down to Point Pleasant Park to survey the changes and restoration since Hurricane Juan and to spend some time relaxing by the ocean; bar-b-q with friends back in Dartmouth

Sunday/Monday: friends and family time; trip to Lawrencetown

  1. And Trident? For the love of God, what about Trident? ;-) And the tunage? Any interesting new CDs or musicians in Halifax we’re all going to hear about (Joel Plaskett was here last night, so you can’t pick him).

  2. Oh Bob. You’re going to *hate* me. I didn’t make it to Trident. Family and friends trump shopping. I didn’t make it down Spring Garden Road either. Oh well, there’s always next time. We had such an awesome trip. Nova Scotia is good for my soul.

As for music, I didn’t get turned on to any new talent. I love Joel Plaskett. (He got nominated for a Polaris prize yesterday!) I’ve been a fan since Down at the Khyber in ’01.

  3. From the photos like you had better weather than all they’re predicting for my upcoming visit. I suspect we’ll be spending time at the movies too. I was hoping shopping at Dartmouth Crossing would be as inspiring at the development itself but it sounds like the same old chain stores we have here. I’ll stick to Spring Garden Road and the surrounding areas, and Fireworks is a must – it’s been around forever.

  4. I say pack your rain gear and go outside anyway. Oh, and pack a sweater. I didn’t thinking it would hot like T.O. down by the ocean. So silly. Hope you have a wonderful time anyway. Remember, the “small” donair is relative.

  5. Rain gear – packed. Sweatshirt/jacket/jeans/warmer clothes in general – packed. Winter jacket – packed (kidding, I hope.) Donair, not an issue, I’ll stick to fish and seafood. Stay tuned for an update next week when I return and thanks for wishing me a wonderful time. We have a great knack for just missing each other, don’t we?
