Chuck vs. Tito: Tonight!

And the undercard looks cool too. Forrest Griffin is awesome.

Update: Chuck won. Forrest lost. It was a good show. Here’s hoping the rumours of a Montreal pay-per-view event in 2007 are true.

Holiday greetings ’06

My personal Christmas card project didn’t get off the ground this year (shame on me). Instead of warm hand-written greetings from me, here are various holiday electronic greetings that have been sent/pointed out to me. If you know of others, please leave links in the comments.

Files: Douglas and Lennon… what’s the point?

According to Derek Chezzi’s Yahoo! Canada News blog, there have been a lot of clicks about Tommy Douglas and the RCMP files. Tommy Douglas said in 1961, ""My friends, watch out for the little fellow with an idea." Mr. Douglas’s ideas scared the crap out of establishment so much that the RCMP kept a hefty file on Douglas, but never found anything.

Along with files about the Greatest (evil, lefty) Canadian, today the Independent Online published details of the top-secret FBI/MI5 for John Lennon. The files reveal "trivial" and "public information". Andrew Gumbel writes:

"Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we can now reveal to you the shocking
news that John Lennon – despite his bewilderingly long hair and his
mystifying habit of lying in bed for days at a time – was a peace
activist who opposed the Vietnam War, spoke out against British
military intervention in Northern Ireland, met and gave interviews to
leading anti-war advocates on both sides of the Atlantic, and was even
known, on occasion, to open his cheque book to put his money where his
mouth was.

We can further reveal that, according to one of J Edgar Hoover’s
confidential sources – on whose reliability and competence more in a
moment – he experimented with illicit drugs, and was busted once for
possession of marijuana."

It just shows how these things work – if ‘someone’ (with the power) decides that you are a threat, then they will investigate you for years and years until they find what they want, even if it doesn’t really exist.  The question needs to be, who is ordering these types of investigations, and why are they not being held accountabe for, if nothing else, the waste of resources.

Choose Your Own Adventure: a very iStudio Christmas

The good folks at iStudio have done another cool holiday greeting this year. As a former agency sibling, I’ve been watching an interesting discussion with Brandy and Neil from iStudio and Tamera Kremer from 3i Media about standards and the social media release. I’m keen on the concept and think it makes a whole lotta sense to extend the approach to the corporate web site/news room, etc.

5 things meme

Lisa Walker tagged me with the "5 things you didn’t know about me" meme. Which is kind of ironic, because Lisa’s very next post is about "the permanent record" of our lives online. Which, I think has  interesting implications for kids who are growing up wired and are sharing all kinds of stuff online.

Hmmm….back to the task at hand…personal details to share with you…

1. I once played the role of a disgruntled sheep in a church Christmas musical. I also played trombone in school and community bands for like ten years. I was/am such a nerd.

2. Snakes. I hate ‘em.

3. My favourite sport is basketball. I played varsity ball in my early teens until I blew my knees.

4. I was born in Brantford, Ontario, but never lived there.

5. Filling out these things gives me fits of insecurity. It is far too much pressure to say something interesting, funny, compelling, comment-worthy, sigh….

I shall pass on the joy to Julia, Ed, Mark, Patsy Stone and Chris.

Me on Six Pixels of Separation Episode 29

Mitch Joel did a "lunch cast" from last week’s New Media for Communications conference on Episode #29 of his Six Pixels of Separation podcast. It features lots of PR voices talking about conversation including yours truly.

I have the power

indexcmotu

Because its Friday, and Rosa and I got chatting about 80s cartoons, here is some retro goodness for you: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. This was huge at our house. My brother and his friends were into the whole scene. I’ve just realized I can use the “I have the power” catch-phrase as a cornerstone for my next social media talk… or maybe not.
