Hip and R&B dominated the pop charts in 2003. It was everywhere. Words like “mad flow” and “crazy beats” have entered the lexicon.

These phat tracks moved Flackadelic’s ass in 2003:

Gossip Folks by Missy Elliott
Pass the Dutch by Missy Elliott
In da Club by 50 Cent
Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly
Cry me a River by Justin Timberlake
Hey Ya by OutKast
Crazy in Love, Beyonce feat. Jay-Z
Jimmy Mathis by Bubba Sparxxx
Stand Up, Ludacris feat. Shawnna
Sing for the Moment by Eminem
Get Busy by Sean Paul
Shut Up by Black Eyed Peas
Where is the Love by Black Eyed Peas feat. Justin Timberlake
The Way You Move, OutKast feat. Sleepy Brown
Beautiful, Snoop Dogg feat. Pharrell & Uncle Charlie Wilson
Excuse Me Miss, Jay-Z feat. Pharrell Williams

It was a year for producers. Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo (aka The Neptunes) worked with the biggest names in pop music and churned out the hits. Dr. Dre, with nothing to prove, proved he still has the million dollar touch producing Curtis Jackson, (aka 50 Cent). R. Kelly had a productive year ? charges of child pornography not withstanding. His album, Chocolate Factory, debuted at number one. Timberland worked his magic with Justin Timberlake and Bubba Sparxxx. He also found time to collaborate with the venerable Missy Elliott. OutKast went supernova in 2003. Entering the charts at number one and holding both the number one and two singles spots, their double-solo album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is one of the best albums of the year.

Best covers:

1. Hurt by Johnny Cash (Nine Inch Nails cover)
2. It’s My Life by No Doubt (Talk Talk cover)
3. Darling Nikki by the Foo Fighters (Prince cover)
